How Can Vision Conditions Be Diagnosed?
Getting a comprehensive eye exam done is the first step towards diagnosing and treating common eye conditions. At our clinic, Summerlin Vision, we perform various tests to determine the current state of your eyesight and look out for common eye conditions or diseases.
What Are Some Common Vision Conditions?
- Myopia
Myopia, also referred to as near-sightedness, is a condition in which people have problems seeing distant objects. Near-sightedness is caused by the cornea being longer or steeper than an eye with perfect vision. So light that passes through the lens and cornea of the eye hits the front of the retina. This makes far-away images appear blurry. Refractive surgery may be a solution to correct your near-sightedness.
- Hyperopia
Hyperopia or far-sightedness is a condition in which the affected eye is slightly shorter than a normal eye and may have a more flat cornea. Thus, the light that reflects off the distant objects focuses behind the retina. This results in closer objects requiring greater focusing power. Lasik surgery is often an excellent solution for patients who have farsightedness.
- Astigmatism
Astigmatism is caused by an uneven incline in the cornea that causes light to be diffused as it enters the eye. Patients with untreated astigmatism find that their vision is shadowed or blurry.
- Presbyopia
This condition usually develops around the age of forty-five and above when the eye’s lens begins to lose its ability to focus correctly. The result is that people with presbyopia cannot concentrate on objects that are both near and far away with the similar visual quality they had as young adults.
- Color Blindness
Color blindness is a genetic condition that mainly affects men. People suffering from color blindness have trouble differentiating between the shades or intensity of colors.
- Cataracts
Cataracts result from the aging process but can occur early in life or even be present at birth. It results in the clouding of vision and problems with glare. However, cataracts can occur alongside other conditions and result in low vision.
- Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disorder of the eye’s optic nerve. In its early stages, glaucoma results in a loss of contrast sensitivity, so low contrast objects may appear washed out. Later, in its advanced stages, glaucoma results in a reduction of peripheral side vision and may lead to a reduction in the ability to see small details.
