Retina Exam in Las Vegas, NV
Regular checkups for your eyes are just as essential as they are for the rest of your body. Even if you don’t observe any changes or problems, a condition may still be developing that will have to be treated. A retina disorder is one such condition. This could lead to total blindness if left untreated.
At Summerlin Vision in the Las Vegas area, we regularly perform eye checkups, including a retina examination for our patients.
What Is a Retina Exam?
A retina exam allows us to look at the structures present at the back of the eye. Dr. Civia McCaffrey will shine a bright light and look through a microscope to evaluate the optic nerve, retina, and blood vessels. The process consists of four sections.
- Dilating the Eyes
The first thing we will do is dilate your eyes with solutions that widen the pupil. This allows the light to enter and provides a clear view of the inside.
- Tonometry Test
Tonometry test measures pressure inside the eye to check for signs of glaucoma. A cloud of air is blown directly into the eye, or a pressure-sensitive tip is placed near or up against the eye.
- Visual Field Test
This test evaluates the entire scope of vision, including the center and peripheral fields. Each eye is tested individually.
- Visual Acuity Test
This test involves reading an eye chart and is the most well-known of all eye tests.
When Should You Get Retina Exams?
If you are facing any of these eye problems, get your eyes checked right away:
- Vision Disruptions
If you see floaters that seem to move across your eyes or flashes of light, it’s best to seek immediate medical attention. These disruptions could be the result of severe issues such as retinal holes or retinal detachment.
- Trouble Focusing
If you suddenly cannot focus on a particular object in your field of vision or experience blurriness when focusing on a single thing, then it’s time to get your eyes checked. Difficulty in focusing can be related to serious eye conditions, which can hinder your vision quality.
- Diabetic/High Blood Pressure
If you have chronic diseases like diabetes or suffer from high blood pressure, then you might also get retinal problems such as diabetic retinopathy. It is one of the primary reasons for blindness.
- Night Blindness
If you have problems seeing clearly at night, it’s time to get your eyes tested. They don’t hurt but could cause other vision problems.
- Blurred Vision
Blurred vision is the loss of sharpness, making an object appear hazy and unclear. Any one of many things could cause blurry vision, but it can also be a symptom of serious eye problems.
What Can a Retina Exam Diagnose?
A retina exam can diagnose hypertension, diabetic retinopathy, detached retina, macular degeneration, and other related conditions. Some problems are not accompanied by noticeable symptoms, making a test necessary for early detection.
