At Summerlin Vision in the Las Vegas area, we offer safe and effective LASIK procedures and we can diagnose and determine if this procedure is appropriate for your condition.
What is LASIK?
LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. It is a refractive eye treatment that can help correct conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The eye surgeon performs LASIK to reshape the eye’s cornea to improve visual acuity by using a microkeratome laser. LASIK has provided countless patients with long-lasting optical clarity and the ability to forego glasses or contact lenses.
How Can LASIK Benefit You?
Besides providing maximum permanent clear vision, LASIK offers:
- A painless procedure.
- Vision correction up to 20/20 or better.
- No bandages or stitches are required.
- Reduced need for glasses or contact lenses.
- Less frequent eye strain
What Are the Conditions That LASIK Surgery Can Treat?
LASIK surgery may be a solution for the correction of one of these vision problems:
Myopia
When the cornea curves are too sharp, or your eyeball is slightly longer than average, light rays will focus in front of the retina and make distant vision blurred. Because of this, you can see objects that are closer more clearly than those far away.
Hyperopia
This is the condition when you have a slightly smaller eyeball or a flat cornea. Here, light falls behind the retina instead of focusing on it. This makes distant objects appear clearly while nearer things look blurred.
Astigmatism
It is a condition in which the shape of your cornea causes blurry or distorted vision.
What to Expect During a LASIK Surgery?
LASIK surgery is usually accomplished in thirty minutes or less. First, the doctor will put numbing drops in the eye and keep your eyelids open using a special instrument. A suction ring will then be placed on the eye, which may cause a feeling of pressure and dim your vision a little.
Then a cutting laser is used to cut a small hinged flap away from the front of your eye. This enables the doctor to access the part of your cornea to be reshaped. Using a programmed laser, the eye surgeon will reshape parts of the cornea. A tiny portion of corneal tissue is extracted with each pulse of the laser beam. After reshaping the cornea, the surgeon then puts the flap back into position. The flap usually heals without stitches.
During the procedure, you will be required to focus on a fixed point of light. Staring at this light allows you to keep your eye fixed while the laser reorganizes your cornea. If LASIK surgery is required in both eyes, the procedure for both is usually done on the same day.
